Bill McEwen, opinion columnist and editor of the editorial page at The Fresno Bee, has retired, Executive Editor Jim Boren reports.

McEwen has covered everything from Fresno City Hall to on-the-scene dispatches from Hmong refugee camps in Thailand, Boren says.

“There are few jobs in the newsroom that he has not held,” Boren wrote. “Bill was The Bee’s Metro columnist for 10 years before becoming editorial page editor in December 2012. He also has been a sportswriter, sports columnist and sports editor.

In 2015, McEwen intended to leave The Bee to become a district director for U.S. Rep. Jim Costa (D-Fresno). McEwen wrote at the time about his change of heart and Costa: “He offered me an incredible opportunity. One that I accepted. And then turned down because I am a newspaper guy at heart.”
