Bill to expand access to local campaign records shelved for the year

Assemblymember James Gallagher’s (R-Yuba City) bill to require local governments to post local campaign finance documents online within two days of applicable filing deadlines is on hold for the rest of the year.

AB 322 passed out of the Assembly Elections and Redistricting Committee unanimously in March, but was referred to the Assembly Appropriations Committee’s suspense file due to its significant price tag.
According to the analysis prepared by Assembly Appropriations Committee staff, the bill had “[u]nknown, significant” costs that were likely in the hundreds of thousands of dollars or more per election.

The bill is now a two-year bill, meaning that it could be brought up for consideration again in January.
