  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: Los Angeles Times
Entry Title: Owl's Escape From the Flames
    Entry Credit: Wally Skalij
Judge Comment: This is a sublime image and an unusual look at a common theme of how fires affect wildlife.
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: The Orange County Register
    Entry Title: Icy stare
    Entry Credit: Jeff Gritchen
Judge Comment: This picture really stood out from the thumbnails and even though one could argue it is just a guy in a costume, I felt the execution was excellent and fulfilled the category.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: The Sacramento Bee
    Entry Title: Sac New Year
    Entry Credit: Jose Luis Villegas
Judge Comment: Beautiful take on a very over done subject. Nicely composed as well.
  • Place Name: Fourth Place
    Contestant Name: Los Angeles Times
    Entry Title: Moonlight Surf
    Entry Credit: Allen J. Schaben
Judge Comment: Great timing and perfect framing. I would have moved this up to third if the surfer was silhouetted against the sea as opposed to getting a bit lost among the pilings.
  • Place Name: Fifth Place
    Contestant Name: The Sacramento Bee
    Entry Title: Tule Elk
    Entry Credit: Hector Amezcua
Judge Comment: Nice light and mood, fits the category perfectly
