  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: The San Bernardino Sun
    Entry Title: Deadly waters
    Entry Credit: Joe Nelson
Judge Comment: Really insightful and well told look at an important issue on the Deadly Waters. It was humanized well, included great writing and some nice surprising elements, including the map and the timeline of deaths and the stories on what happened. Nice public service project that shows how you guys punched way above your weight on this one.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Record Searchlight
Entry Title: Drag in Redding: A story of love, friendship and survival
    Entry Credit: Amber Sandhu
Judge Comment: Really nice look at the LGBT community in Redding, its existence and acceptance and history, through the story about drag queen shows. It was colorful, filled with punchy writing and some heart tugging emotions. Nice job.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: The Tribune
Entry Title: A fight for her death
Entry Credit: Lindsey Holden, Joe Johnston
Judge Comment: What a powerful story that so many unfortunately deal with. I think the story could have been broken up maybe into 3 or 4 instead of 2 to keep the reader's attention and focus each story on one theme to build to the final ending, her death. Always good to include solutions and resources, which you did, as well as a piece on how you reported the story.
  • Place Name: Fourth Place
    Contestant Name: The Record
Entry Title: Picking up the pieces; Project shows a part of life that goes unnoticed; Still wondering why; She never returned to her baby; No chance to say goodbye; It's crazy. It don't make no sense
Entry Credit: Roger Phillips, Donald Blount, Nicholas Filipas, Almendra Carpizo
Judge Comment: Nice series that hits home with readers and your community. The writing and stories flow nicely and show people from all walks of life. Only thing I would have added is solutions and what's changed or should change.
  • Place Name: Fifth Place
Contestant Name: San Gabriel Valley Tribune
Entry Title: Motorcycle-involved deaths have been on the rise for 22 years — especially in Southern California
    Entry Credit: Steve Scauzillo
Judge Comment: Solid look at an issue that many probably were unaware of. I would have ended again with more from the family you started the story with. I would have pulled out the facts in a separate headline. But nice enterprise piece overall.
