    Contestant Name: Sacramento Business Journal
Entry Title: A soft drink giant's four-year standoff with the city over wastewater pollution
    Entry Credit: Scott Rodd
Judge Comment: Dogged reporting, record sourcing and persistence paid off in a well-told story about an issue that is clearly affecting this community and has for years. Also you guys did a great job of distilling the information in ways your readers could understand with the timeline and pullouts on the settlements paid to date. One thing to consider in the future is using the voices of those affected in short humanizing ways would help with the storytelling. Nice work!
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Black Voice News
Entry Title: Family of 2016 Shooting Victim Prepares to go to Court for Justice / Bitter Justice
    Entry Credit: S.E. Williams
Judge Comment: Good solid reporting on such an important issue around the country.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Tahoe Daily Tribune
    Entry Title: Beneath the Surface
    Entry Credit: Claire Cudahy
Judge Comment: I was fascinated with this story from the beginning to the end. Sometimes, historical looks at an issue or story that was once written are boring and routine. This was just the opposite. Well written, punchy quotes and great organization.
  • Place Name: Fourth Place
    Contestant Name: Tahoe Daily Tribune
    Entry Title: Tahoe housing series
    Entry Credit: Maggie Mayer
Judge Comment: Solid reporting on an issue affecting many communities. The commutes, toll on families, the school information all fleshed out well how serious this issue is for the region. I would have sought more local residents to add that extra firepower to the package to truly show the entire impact on families and employees.

Judge Comment: Nice job of taking a good question and turning it into an interesting look at the ski season.
