Judge Comment: Petaluma Argus, I love the layout. None of the stories on the cover seem forced or fighting for space. The pieces are intelligently written, photos look professional with a journalistic (unposed) approach. Keep this going! I love the Opinion page; the cartoon, Other News, Editorial, and I love the title ?Pulse of Petaluma,? I can imagine myself with a hot cup of coffee, relaxing and reading this. Very nice design and layout! Great copy comes from well-written pieces. I believe you have this here. Good editing and design. You're knocking it out of the park. One more thing: congratulations on actually having a sports section as well. In a time when some organizations have downsized and moved their sports columnists to other sections, it seems to me you have kept true. Celebrate the press! Congratulations Petaluma Argus!

Judge Comment: This is an exciting newspaper. I absolutely love the design and layout; without crowding, I see so many stories and photos on the front page. Great writing throughout! Photos work well with copy, advertising doesn?t appear to overtake stories. It appears you have an actual professional photographer on staff? Unsure, but the photos look good, keep to this, keep from too many contributed photos. The Junior Journal is an awesome idea! Love the Sports section as well, it?s more than a single page. Local coverage is very good here, I love the quality of writing. With so much to do in Sacramento, a Dining and Entertainment is crucial, you?ve established it here. Great work!

Judge Comment: Stories and photos hold well with each other on front page, graphic design and layout doesn?t seem forced for page space. Effective design to prevent too gray a page, good design, good stage for photos. I do like the one, two teasers at top of front page, again nothing forced. Headlines ?Spotlight on Housing? and ?Slipping through their fingers? are coupled with effective journalistic photos make for a great front page, drew me in. Quality of headlines ?Can the missing middle democratize housing/? is very effective. Well-written pieces throughout, good local coverage and coupled this with great photos. Looks like you still have a professional photographer(s) on staff, congrats here. It?s a great publication. I didn?t find the ad space intruding on the copy. I really enjoyed this paper.

Judge Comment: I glanced at the skiers somersaults, read the header ?Killing It? and this captured My attention throughout. There?s plenty to do in your area, so your local stories are also killing it! Nicely written pieces on the Opinion pages! Sports and Outdoors! Sun Snapshots is great! There?s so much here in one publication, I don?t see overpowering advertising taking away from the copy. Kudos to the designers, graphic arts, and layout! Great headlines, photography (don?t use too many contributed photos)! Nice work!

Judge Comment: Love the diverse coverage on the front page; farm workers swindles, soccer championship Stand-alone photo, early Covid-19 coverage, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and rollover crash. There?s a lot going here, but not really forced. Great local coverage of what?s happening in the community. I see good writing in the pieces, nice headers (Cardinal soccer comeback and Our Lady of Guadalupe watches over neighborhood). Like the rest of us, jump pages look a little gray without photos. Plenty of photos in Sports, but I would like to see one main photo in the stories. Very nice work!
