Judge Comment: I love the silhouette. I know the kids are laughing it up in the main pic, this is a great photo, but I can't get over the silhouette. Get closer, you'll still be able to distance. What if you would have gotten the faces of the people in the back of the truck? It's good now, but a shot of them facing forward, we'd see emotion on their faces. Good essay, good eye here! Way to go! Congratulations!

Contestant Name: Silicon Valley Business Journal
    Entry Title: Street Scenes

Judge Comment: Great use of lenses; close-up, wide angle, and telephoto, all to the backdrop of SJ street scenes. I would have loved to see an evening shot of SJ, or a shot from inside of a business looking out onto the street, although unsure on this because of Covid-19 closures. Great eye! Nice work!

Felicidades!

Judge Comment: I love Part 2 page photos! Get those faces! Get that emotion, and get whatever is happening inside of the cars, relatives and friends screaming for their kids! Move fast, distance, seek these opportunities. Nice work!
  • Place Name: Fifth Place
    Contestant Name: Santa Barbara Independent
Entry Title: The Foodbank of S.B. County
    Entry Credit: Daniel Dreifuss
Judge Comment: I know the essay is on the workers at the food bank, but thank goodness there's one shot of a recipient of the food. This is what volunteering is all about. I'd get closer, you can still distance. My favorite shots are of the workers delivering to the people in need. This is what these organizations are all about. Use a variety of focal length lenses, wide angle, telephoto. Always keep in mind that some volunteers simply may not make the final cut, and this is all right.
