  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: Napa Valley Register
    Entry Title: Glass Fire
    Entry Credit: Tim Carl
Judge Comment: Beautiful image and a guaranteed lock for lead art on A1. I love this photo. It captures everything about the story – the size and strength of the fire, the people’s focus on the chopper and fire, and the sign tells us the significance of where this fire is.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: The Press Democrat
    Entry Title: Skyhawk On Fire
    Entry Credit: Kent Porter
Judge Comment: This powerful image literally brings a wildfire home. It’s not mountains or roads, it’s real homes on an entire block engulfed in flames. The hoses rolled out in the middle of the street and the running firefighter gives the photo an extra touch.
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: The San Bernardino Sun
    Entry Title: Fire reflection
    Entry Credit: Terry Pierson
Judge Comment: This doesn’t quite rise to A1 lead art for me only because there were obviously more important images for the reader. But I love this photo, not only because of the flames in the lenses of his glasses but also because of his expression – tired and maybe even a little despair. Suggested crop: I’d crop all the way in on this individual and come in some from the left to show only his face and really bring out his glasses. This would make a wonderful anchor for a picture page.
  • Place Name: Fourth Place
    Contestant Name: The Modesto Bee
Entry Title: Cows left hungry in Del Puerto Canyon in aftermath of SCU Lightning Complex fire
    Entry Credit: Andy Alfaro
Judge Comment: This image will resonate with local readers. The broad range of the photo shows us the entirety of the fire’s destruction. The cows give it that extra hometown touch.
  • Place Name: Fifth Place
    Contestant Name: The Union
    Entry Title: SmartsvilleFire-GVU-071020-2
    Entry Credit: Elias Funez
Judge Comment: Powerful photo offering a different angle, with the firefighter dragging out his hose while his focus is on those mighty flames. Very nice image. Definite A1 lead art potential.
