Breaking News ( Weeklies: 25,001 & over) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: Beverly Hills Courier
Entry Title: Shooting at Il Pastaio
    Entry Credit: Samuel Braslow
Judge Comment: Real breaking new in Beverly Hills yet a few details seem be be missing and there's apparently no follo. It sounds as if the loyal luncher Behassen -- he of the watch worth "hundreds of thousands," was the target, but who is he? Do the cops think this was related to the so-callled smash and grabs at upscale stores?
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: The Acorn
Entry Title: 'Auditor' crew sets hooks in Old Agoura
Entry Credit: Becca Whitnall, John Loesing
Judge Comment: This is detailed look at an interesting problem but would have done better with the second graf as a harder news lede. It's kind of a stretch to call a story published 11 days after the incident ""breaking news"
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: The Beach Reporter
Entry Title: Run a mile, paddle a mile, chug a six-pack. Yeah, it's a real different sort of Ironman competition
    Entry Credit: Daniella Segura
Judge Comment: This very local story is in deed breaking new in Hermosa Beach--the kind of story locals likely loved and look forward to every year.
  • Place Name: Fourth Place
    Contestant Name: The Acorn
    Entry Title: In plane sight
Entry Credit: Ian Bradley, John Loesing
Judge Comment: Lede is too soft and story needed more information on the cause. Photos of the plane being towed might have been fun.
