Coverage of Newsom Recall Election ( Weeklies: 4,301 - 11,000) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: Petaluma Argus-Courier
Entry Title: Meet the state senator spending big to keep Newsom in office
    Entry Credit: Tyler Silvy
Judge Comment: A very nice, strong article. Answers a lot of questions, good amount of quotes. The article feels somewhat balanced on the recall issue itself, but this is an article clearly about Bill Dodd. Although generally well written, there are some poor choices of words, such as attributing and comprise, which is misused. Overall, the writing is very strong and the piece flows nicely.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: The Sun-Gazette
Entry Title: Tulare County is key in recall campaign
    Entry Credit: Reggie Ellis
Judge Comment: This is an interesting article, well written, but not balanced. In retrospect, it reads a bit like famous last words. All of the quotations are from pro-recall sources. On the one hand, it can be argued that this is an article strictly about the recall effort, but on the other, since it was written prior to that election, it would have been nice to see some arguments from the other, and in this case, winning, side. (And Newsom didn’t just squeak by, he won by a landslide.) Some spelling and grammar errors, Newsom’s name is misspelled, its is misused.
