Public Service Journalism ( Dailies: 15,001 - 50,000) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: The Press Democrat
Entry Title: Institutional Betrayal: Sonoma Academy teacher harassment, school inaction
Entry Credit: Kaylee Tornay, Martin Espinoza, John Burgess, Elissa Chudwin
Judge Comment: The Press Democrat's dedication to digging into the allegations against a longtime teacher at a respected institution uncovered a much wider and disturbing problem of sexual harassment and abuse, and a culture of sweeping complaints under the rug. There is little doubt that had these journalists not dug deeper, the efforts of the few brave women who sounded alarms would not have gotten the attention they deserved, the actions of other abusers would have never been revealed, and other girls and young women would still be vulnerable to abuse today. This is the definition of public service -- with strong editorials calling for accountability. Well done.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: The Fresno Bee
Entry Title: Fresno code enforcement series
Entry Credit: Cassandra Garibay, Monica Vaughan
Judge Comment: This team did a commendable job working relentlessly to give voice to the most vulnerable in their community. This is the type of problem that is found in almost every city, yet is rarely tackled in such a way as to hold those responsible accountable, including the local government that is supposed to protect tenants. Not only did the Fresno Bee report on the problems, they made an effort to educate the tenants about their rights. A strong example of what public service should be.
