Sports Action Photo ( Weeklies: 4,300 & under) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: Pacifica Tribune
Entry Title: Shotput in the shadows
    Entry Credit: Adam Pardee
Judge Comment: Excellent use of lighting to create dramatic effect. Outstanding capture of the moment of release, allowing the viewer to experience the athlete's strength and power.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: The Trinity Journal
Entry Title: Race to the ball
    Entry Credit: Wayne Agner
Judge Comment: The expressions on the players' faces and the intensity of focus on the ball make this image stand out. The frozen action and the position of the ball in the frame add to the drama.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Claremont Courier
Entry Title: Season ends by inches in OT
    Entry Credit: Andrew Alonso
Judge Comment: The goalie's extension combined with the striker's anticipation make this a fine sports image. The inability to see facial expression, though, impacted the effectiveness somewhat.
  • Place Name: Fourth Place
    Contestant Name: The Trinity Journal
    Entry Title: Spring volleyball
    Entry Credit: Wayne Agner
Judge Comment: A fine "moment in time" capture. While the photographer cannot control the athleticism on display, the action of the primary subject (in white) is not, in this judge's view, particularly noteworthy from a storytelling standpoint. However, technical quality (focus, shutter speed, exposure) is strong.
  • Place Name: Fifth Place
    Contestant Name: The Trinity Journal
    Entry Title: Diving in
    Entry Credit: Wayne Agner
Judge Comment: Powerful action captured in this photo. The overall effectiveness is diminished somewhat by low light challenges that resulted in blurring, particularly of the primary subject's facial expression as well as the ball.
