    Contestant Name: Pasadena Outlook
Entry Title: “Food Pantry Feeds More Than the Hungry”
    Entry Credit: Camila Castellanos
Judge Comment: Terrific story. The couple's love for each other and the community really comes through. I like the details on how they persevered through theft and other problems.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Gilroy Dispatch
Entry Title: Tennis club, pickleball players in dispute over use of courts
    Entry Credit: Erik Chalhoub
Judge Comment: The story is very easy to read. It lays out the conflict clearly. Engaging even for people who play neither, I'd think.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Santa Barbara Independent
Entry Title: A Mother’s Grief Over Her Son’s Murder
    Entry Credit: Nick Welsh
Judge Comment: I didn't like the lede. It's much more about Rita than Angel. But when you get past that and into the story, it's very well told.
  • Place Name: Fourth Place
    Contestant Name: Coachella Valley Independent
Entry Title: On Cocktails: Many Bartenders Loathe the Espresso Martini … Yet They Take Great Pride in the Ones They Make
    Entry Credit: Kevin Carlow
Judge Comment: The writing here is conversational, engaging, fun. The story is informative, too, of course. Including a few recipe options was a great idea.

    Contestant Name: Coachella Valley Independent
Entry Title: Vine Social: A Century Ago, We Had Wars, Pandemics and Natural Disasters—but We Didn’t Have Legal Wine
    Entry Credit: Katie Finn
Judge Comment: Easy read, with nice touches like: clever winemakers would barrel their unfermented juice with a giant warning on the top that read: “Warning! The addition of yeast may cause alcoholic fermentation.” So, here’s your juice and your packet of yeast … now run along.
