    Entry Title: Rebuild, Reburn

Judge Comment: A thought-provoking series of columns on how much we spend on trying to rebuild burned out communities. The authors make a strong case for not doing what's considered the noble thing by rebuilding a community that's ravaged and is prone to wildfires again and instead spend that funding on building homes for people who need it. The writers spent time with the communities and people affected and it shows with solid reporting and impactful writing.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Los Angeles Times
Entry Title: Columns by Erika D. Smith
    Entry Credit: Erika D. Smith
Judge Comment: These two columns by Erika D. Smith make you stop, consider and think. The haunting column of the girl left besides the freeway will stick with me. So many deaths are ignored, and Smith took the time to make sure this girl's was not.

    Contestant Name: San Francisco Chronicle
Entry Title: Ann Killion: Sports Columnist
    Entry Credit: Ann Killion
Judge Comment: Sports is more than balls and scores. Ann Killion shows how it is connected to some of our biggest life issues, such as gun violence, abortion rights and Title IX.
  • Competition Comment: I learned a lot by reading these columns and enjoying the writers' unique perspectives on issues of our day.
