  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: The San Diego Union-Tribune
Entry Title: ‘She was on top of the world’: The rise and fall of San Diego’s largest Ponzi schemer
Entry Credit: Lori Weisberg, Greg Moran, Adriana Heldiz
Judge Comment: Fascinating in-depth profile of the mastermind behind a $350 million Ponzi scheme that went on for years. Lots of details, myriad voices...well written. Love how reporters explained her scheme. The video and audio--seeing and hearing Gina in a deposition-- took the stories up a notch.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Los Angeles Times
Entry Title: Legal Weed, Broken Promises
Entry Credit: Los Angeles Times Staff
Judge Comment: A good-old fashioned investigative story that had it all: political corruption, worker exploitation, death...all told through amazing interviews. The stories were smartly executed.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: The Press Democrat
Entry Title: Gold Coin and Palms Inn: Broken promises, squalid rooms in publicly funded homeless housing sites
Entry Credit: Andrew Graham, Ethan Varian, John Burgess, Kent Porter
Judge Comment: Such an important story to tell, and it was done with rich detail and interviews that only could have been gotten by boots-on-the-ground reporting.
  • Competition Comment: The competition was stiff. So many good stories: how the unhoused are treated; a former 9/11 suspect; militias...wow.
