Editorial Comment ( Dailies: 50,001 & over) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: Los Angeles Times
Entry Title: Editorial: Tired of City Hall scandals? This is the moment to reform Los Angeles city government
    Entry Credit: Kerry Cavanaugh
Judge Comment: Strong editorial with a good balance of background and call to action. Makes a compelling case for reform and change by showing some of the outrageous and unacceptable behavior of electeds. And nicely foreshadows commentary to come.
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: The Mercury News/East Bay Times
Entry Title: Report shows why voters should oust Kremen from Santa Clara Valley Water board
    Entry Credit: Ed Clendaniel
Judge Comment: Strong summation of the shortcomings of this elected official and clear reasoning for why he should be replaced. Persuasive and well written.
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: The Mercury News/East Bay Times
Entry Title: Cupertino needs overhaul. Elect Fruen, Mohan and Bono
    Entry Credit: Ed Clendaniel
Judge Comment: Textbook example of a strong endorsement editorial. Well reasoned and persuasive, fair minded but direct in who makes the best candidates. Great job!
  • Competition Comment: The entries from the LAT and Merc News-East Bay Times were well written. San Diego's entries were creative in approach but lacking in other respects, such as persuasiveness and argument.
