Entry Title: Desert Sun: Riverside County Jail Deaths
    Entry Credit: Julie Makinen
Judge Comment: Comments: The writing is inviting; the reasoning is strong; and the topic is significant. The comparisons with other counties are a particularly persuasive approach. Top-notch work.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: The Fresno Bee
Entry Title: Fresno hospital leaders prioritized personal interests over patients
    Entry Credit: Tad Weber
Judge Comment: Comments: This editorial takes on an important community institution, immediately tells the reader why it's important and lays out clear action steps. This exemplifies the watchdog role of a local editorial board.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Ventura County Star
Entry Title: Ventura’s sensible housing remedy
    Entry Credit: Star Editorial Board
Judge Comment: Comments: In all the overheated rhetoric about California's housing crisis, this editorial highlights a reasonable compromise and puts it into context. A good example of adding light, not heat, to an important debate.
  • Competition Comment: As a former editorial writer, I'm very glad to see that local editorial commentary is still alive and well across California. Most of the entries had much to recommend them, but the three winners stood out for their writing, their clear arguments and the significance of the issues.
