    Entry Title: Home Run Derby

Judge Comment: Beautiful photo whose wonderful composition and depth of emotion tells a wonderful story with many layers. The two people in the foreground perfectly frame the action just behind, in which a man grins knowing he’s just caught the ultimate game souvenir. To do this, he’s successfully fought off a half-dozen others around him, including one man who is clearly not happy he’s just missed the catch. And at the back of the image, a fan using a cell phone appears to capture a the same scene from the opposite direction. Wonderful all around.

  • Competition Comment: The entries in this category were all wonderful moments, and a reminder that sometimes the most wonderful sports images occur outside the actual contest.
