  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: Los Angeles Times
Entry Title: Darvin Ham survived the streets, a stray bullet and intense grief to coach the Lakers
    Entry Credit: Dan Woike
Judge Comment: This was really well done. Great writing. After reading this, as a casual basketball fan, I now know and can appreciate who Darvin Ham is and all he has gone through. Great job of researching and talking to people from his past and painting a bold picture of who Ham is.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Los Angeles Times
Entry Title: Their coach felled by a stroke, this team rallied for him and became champions
    Entry Credit: Luca Evans
Judge Comment: A bit of a tear-jerker of a story, but you felt the glee and happiness for everyone as the story built to the City Championship. Well done telling the season story and the struggles of Coach Manny.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Los Angeles Times
Entry Title: Inside Klete Keller’s fall from Olympic gold to the Capitol riot
    Entry Credit: Nathan Fenno
Judge Comment: Really in-depth and all encompassing. I think the only weak part was mentioning all the issues with the ex-wife for it seemed to go on and on and how much of it needed to be written is questionable. However, I think you painted a good picture of Keller's definite mental issues and how it perhaps led to his involvement in Jan. 6. By the way, was Keller approached at all for an interview? I don't recall reading that. I would have loved to here his side to all this.
  • Competition Comment: If I had an issue with these stories it was the overall length. How many newspaper readers today read anything much over 1,000 - 1,500 words? Frankly a few of these stories could have been under 2,000 words for sometimes the various comments/quotes were repetitive. Overall, though, I enjoyed reading each one for the writer did a great job with his assignment.
