    Judge Comment: The first-place winner put me in the arena, conveyed information in an engaging way and did an impressive amount of research.

    Contestant Name: The San Bernardino Sun
    Entry Title: Champion teen boxer brings wealth of knowledge to San Bernardino youth
    Entry Credit: Brian Whitehead
    Judge Comment: The writer did a nice job putting the reader in the training facility and showed an excellent command of language. The story also was not over-written; some might have gone longer, but I think he nailed it on the length.

    Contestant Name: Daily Press
    Entry Title: 'Let's go, Christian': Victor Valley High School teammates cheer on disabled student
    Entry Credit: Jose Quintero
    Judge Comment: Picked wisely in selecting an at-risk kid who is excelling and the story conveyed warmth in a sincere way. I also liked the revelation of the boy's unique hobbies.
  • Competition Comment: The entries were impressive in this category. They were almost all above average to outstanding.
