  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: The Sacramento Bee
    Entry Title: Mark Rippee
    Entry Credit: Melinda Henneberger
Judge Comment: Can't stop reading. Amazing piece. Explains the difficulties of the so-called chronically homeless with grace, sensitivity but also clarity. Also one of the few times a quote lead works.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: The Press Democrat
Entry Title: The untold story of a daring 2 a.m. rescue amid the Tubbs Fire that saved dozens of seniors
Entry Credit: Phil Barber, Randi Rossmann
Judge Comment: Wow. Just wow. A heart wrenching story. Hard to put down, but hard to read. I'm not crying. Just something in my eye.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: The Sacramento Bee
    Entry Title: Caviar capital
    Entry Credit: Benjy Egel
Judge Comment: A story that makes you stop. Never knew about any of this
  • Competition Comment: This was an incredibly difficult category to judge. Not only were the entries excellent, the wide variety of topics, styles and approaches made it hard to determine the best overall. But the ones chosen all had a deep sense of the topic as well as the larger context. Amazing work all!
