A Day of Advocacy and Engagement in Sacramento

The 26th Annual California News Publishers Association (CNPA) Governmental Affairs Fly-In took place on February 5, 2025, bringing together publishers, journalists, and industry advocates for a day of legislative engagement and networking at the Capitol. Attendees seized the opportunity to meet with lawmakers, discuss pressing policy issues, and strengthen their collective voice in support of California’s journalism industry.

A Full Day of Advocacy

The CNPA Annual Business Meeting and Board Meeting provided an update on association initiatives, followed by a networking lunch.

During lunch, attendees welcomed Anthony York, President of Grizzly Bear Media and a seasoned communications strategist with experience in media, public affairs, and crisis communications. He served as Senior Advisor for Communications and Strategy in the Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom, where he played a key role in shaping messaging and strategic outreach. Recently, Google and Assemblymember Buffy Wicks have asked Anthony to help guide the three-party agreement through its next steps, including the state budget process and the establishment of the new entity to receive and distribute the new local journalism funds.

Legislative Visits and Policy Discussions

Following a brief legislative orientation, participants walked over to the Capitol’s Swing Space, where they engaged in productive meetings with legislators and their staff. Discussions centered on open meetings, public notice requirements, and other policy matters impacting news publishers. Attendees had the opportunity to highlight the crucial role of local journalism and advocate for policies that support transparency and press freedom.

Networking and Legislative Reception

As the day transitioned into the evening, CNPA hosted a Legislative Reception at the Library Reception Hall, offering a relaxed setting for members to connect with lawmakers, legislative staff, and fellow attendees. The event featured an awards presentation, where Legislator of the Year awards were given out to Assemblywoman Blanca E. Rubio and Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas. Additionally, the Executive of the Year award was posthumously awarded to Dan Schaub, recognizing his lasting contributions to the industry.

This year’s Fly-In was a resounding success, providing CNPA members with a vital platform to engage with lawmakers and champion the future of California journalism. Through meaningful conversations and strategic advocacy, attendees reinforced the importance of a strong and independent press.
