CNPA Staff Requests Info about Newspaper Jobs

CNPA Staff Requests Info about Newspaper Jobs

Dear CNPA Members,

Thank you to these companies that responded to this request in the Legislative Bulletin requesting an estimate of the number of employees you have:

Acorn Newspapers
Beverly Hills Courier
Century Group Newspapers
Community Media Corp.
Eagle Newspapers
Gannett (California)
Inter Church News
Larchmont Chronicle
Long Beach Post
Mariposa Gazette
Monterey County Weekly
Rosemond News
Santa Ynez Valley Star
Sonoma Media Investments
Southern California News Group

We are requesting additional information if you have it available.

After further consideration, staff is requesting that CNPA members provide us with the total number of jobs at your publications. Please include in your estimates the breakdown of employees and contracted workers. We intend to use the expanded number of jobs that are truly at stake if publications reduce days or print publications altogether.

The Legislature has heard CNPA’s arguments that journalism is essential to our democracy, but they also need to know how many people are impacted if publications are unable to recover from the loss of ad revenue due to COVID-19 and the increase in costs if the news carrier exemption from AB 5 is not extended.

As emphasized before, Staff will only share the aggregate number of newspaper jobs in California with the Legislature at the appropriate time. Information about individual publications will remain strictly confidential.

Please provide the total number of employees at your newspaper or in your group by Wednesday, July 16 to CNPA Staff Attorney,  Brittney Barsotti.
