On April 25, the Assembly Privacy Committee will consider AB 886, the California Journalism Preservation Act (CJPA).
Assemblywoman Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) has authored the bill to give news organizations in the state a chance to get paid for their original content when Big Tech scrapes it from the internet or displays it in response to searches and keeps the vast majority of attendant search and ad revenue … all without investing a dime in the expense of employing the journalists who produce it.
You can help to combat the Big Tech forces that are lining up against the Wicks bill. There are three ways to do so:
- Write to Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel and the members of Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection (Members’ office contact information), which he chairs. We provide a sample letter and several articles and editorials as resources for your communication.
- Request a personal meeting – by phone, Zoom or in person – with the Privacy Committee member that represents your legislative district and express your support. Talking points to help guide your conversation are provided.
- Run editorials in support of AB 886. A Fact Sheet on the bill is provided.
