Doug Ernst, former editor of the Napa Valley Register and publisher of the St. Helena Star and The Weekly Calistogan, died Dec. 11, 2018, after a short battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), The Register reported. He was 64.
Ernst served a total of 33 years in Napa Valley journalism. The San Jose State alum was a reporter for The Register from 1978 until 1988, then became city editor, editor and served as executive editor from 2000 to 2004.
He was editor/publisher of the St. Helena Star and publisher of The Weekly Calistogan from 2004 to 2011, when his job was eliminated. Ernst went on to form a public relations firm and more recently had been the public information officer for Napa Valley College.
