Eighteen newsrooms to host reporter corps

Eighteen California newsrooms will be hosts for 2020 Report for America corps members, the nonprofit announced. In all, Report for America will place 250 journalists into 164 newsrooms in 46 states plus Puerto Rico and D.C.

Any newsroom was eligible during the application period that closed in September.

Prospective corps reporters can apply now for opportunities beginning next June.

The program recruits and trains talented journalists and places them with local newsrooms. Successful host newsrooms have defined a local reporting need, can define a beat and can provide a local match. RFA puts in half the salary (up to $20,000) for an entry-level position.

The reporters are managed at the local level, with continued support and mentoring from the national RFA.

Report for America has eight reporters stationed in California this year. They are collaborating with:

  • CALMatters
  • Chico Enterprise-Record/Ukiah Daily Journal
  • The Desert Sun, Palm Springs
  • The Fresno Bee
  • The Mercury News
  • The Modesto Bee
  • The Sun-Gazette, Exeter
