The Daily Californian Education Foundation has named Ellen Nakashima as the 2017 alumna of the year for UC Berkeley’s student newspaper.
Nakashima, who graduated from Cal in 1984, has been a Washington Post reporter since 1995. She started as a Metro reporter covering county cops, courts and schools, then quickly moved up to the State House bureau in Richmond, Va., covering state politics.
“Ellen’s national security reporting has been a hallmark of the important coverage of the administration,’’ said Robert Cauthorn, the chair of the Daily Cal’s operations board and the chief operating officer of Greenspun Media Group, which owns the Las Vegas Sun and numerous other publications. “Her work underscores the importance of journalism — and training young media professionals — in today’s world.”
