Start gathering your best work: The 2019 California Journalism Awards are underway. The contest recognizes the outstanding reporting, design, photography and multimedia of CNPA members from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2019.

Entry packages for the Print, Digital and Campus contests will be mailed to CNPA members this week.

If you can’t wait for the printed packages, the rules and categories for this year’s contests are available online now:

The deadline for entries is Monday, Jan. 20, 2020, but don’t wait until the last minute to start uploading your best work from 2019. The contest website is now open.

The Digital Contest, now in its second year, is open to CNPA Digital News Media members and Print members.

We have changed the Digital Contest divisions slightly from last year to accommodate smaller print publications that may have large online audiences. Here are new digital divisions, based on average monthly unique visitors:

  • Division A: 400,001 and over
  • Division B: 40,001 to 400,000
  • Division C: 40,000 and under

Please check your assigned division when you upload your entries. If we have you in the wrong division, contact the contest administrator as soon as possible.

Also returning this year is the Open Contest. Entries in the Open Contest categories will be the first-place winners from all circulation and audience divisions in the Print and Digital competitions in the following categories:

  • Columns
  • Enterprise News Story or Series
  • Feature Photo
  • Feature Story
  • In-Depth Reporting
  • Investigative Reporting
  • News Photo
  • Photojournalism
  • Public Service Journalism

Separate entries in the Open Contest are not permitted.

CNPA will present the awards at the California Journalism Awards Gala on Saturday, May 16, 2020, in Long Beach. We’ll publish more details about the event in the coming weeks.
