Sandy Close is founder of Ethnic Media Services, which works to enhance the capacity of ethnic news outlets to inform and engage diverse audiences on broader public issues with the goal of building a more inclusive participatory democracy.

Matthew Hall is Matthew T. Hall is the editorial and opinion director at The San Diego Union-Tribune. He is also president of the Society for Professional Journalists.

Julie Makinen is executive editor of The Desert Sun in Palm Springs and Gannett’s state editor.
