CNPA will honor Sen. Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley) for her tireless efforts on behalf of the California news industry’s access to public information.

Skinner was elected to the Senate in 2016 after serving three terms in the Assembly. She has been a leader in the Senate and currently serves as chair of the Senate Budget Committee and California Legislative Women’s Caucus.

Skinner has been a fierce advocate for transparency, passing landmark legislation peeling back decades of secrecy around police misconduct records (SB 1421). She followed up with legislation expanding access to police misconduct records with SB 16, closing loopholes law enforcement agencies were exploiting to avoid having to turn over records.

Skinner is also the author of SB 254, working to restore media access to California’s prisons. The press and the public are all better informed because of Skinner’s repeated efforts.

This award is not normally given to a legislator; however, given her years of service and numerous fights expanding the public and press’ access to vital public records, CNPA is proud to honor Sen. Skinner with the Freedom of Information Award.

Please join us at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 as we honor Skinner for her valuable support.
