Entry packages for the 2019 California Journalism Awards are in the mail and should arrive at CNPA-member offices this week.
The rules and categories for this year’s contests are also available online:
The contest website is now open. The deadline for entries is Monday, Jan. 20, 2020.
The California Journalism Awards uses the BetterBNC contest platform provided by CNPA Allied Member SmallTownPapers.
The Digital Contest, now in its second year, is open to CNPA Digital News Media members and print members.
The top two audience divisions in this year’s Digital Contest have been adjusted from last year. The change is an attempt to make the Digital Contest more competitive for CNPA’s smaller-circulation print members with larger online audiences.
Here are the new divisions:
- Division A: 400,001 and over average monthly unique visitors
- Division B: 40,001 to 400,000
- Division C: 40,000 and under
Please check your assigned division when you upload your entries. If we have you in the wrong division, contact the contest administrator as soon as possible.
Also returning this year is the Open Contest. Entries in the Open Contest categories will be the first-place winners from all circulation and audience divisions in the Print and Digital competitions in the following categories:
- Enterprise News Story or Series
- Feature Photo
- Feature Story
- In-Depth Reporting
- Investigative Reporting
- News Photo
- Public Service Journalism
Separate entries in the Open Contest are not permitted.
CNPA will present the awards at the California Journalism Awards Gala on Saturday, May 16, 2020, in Long Beach. We’ll publish more details about the event in the coming weeks.
