Gridley Herald closes after 137 years

GateHouse Media’s Gridley Herald, a twice-weekly that covered the Butte County City of Gridley and adjacent towns, issued its final edition on Friday, Aug. 31. The Herald had published for 137 years.

“The price of newsprint increasing is the main reason given but the economy and the bottom line are of course entered into this difficult decision,” Publisher Lisa Van De Hey said in a message to readers.

Van De Hey had been publisher since June 1998, when longtime owner and publisher Bill Burleson retired after selling the newspaper to Liberty Group Publishing. The Burlesons — Bill’s father and grandfather before him — had operated the newspaper since 1897.

Liberty Group Publishing was renamed GateHouse in 2005.
