In Memoriam: Al McCombs, 91

Unnamed (3)Allen P. McCombs, former owner of Champion Newspapers in Chino, and 1982 CNPA president, died March 12, 2021, at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Inland Christian Home in Ontario, the Chino Valley Champion reported. He was 91 and had complications of pneumonia.

McCombs had owned the Chino Champion from 1956 to 2017 and was its publisher until 2006. He wrote a column, Rolltop Roundup, until last month.

Tank Town Media acquired the Chino operation in 2017. Tank Town is co-owned by Will Fleet (2005-06 CNPA president) and Ralph Alldredge (2011-12 CNPA president).

McCombs received the California Press Association’s Justus F. Craemer Newspaper Executive of the Year Award in 1997 and its Philip N. McCombs Achievement Award in 2014. He was a sustaining supporter of Cal Press and funded an annual internship grant named for his father, Philip. Donations in McCombs’ memory are welcome. Click to donate
