In Memoriam: Phelps Dewey, 93

UnnamedPhelps Dewey, CNPA president in 1989, died March 29, 2021, in Fort Bragg, his family informed CNPA. He was 93.

Dewey, a Minnesota native, moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1953, joining the San Francisco Chronicle as promotions director. In 1960, he relocated to Santa Fe, N.M., to work for Los Alamos Science Laboratory, and then onto Chicago for a position at the Chicago Daily News/Chicago Sun Times.

In 1963, Dewey returned to the San Francisco Chronicle and remained until his retirement in 1996.

During his tenure there, Dewey also served as general manager of the Chronicle Features Syndicate, promotion director for the San Francisco Newspaper Printing Company, assistant to the publisher and director of the San Francisco Newspaper Agency.
