Phil Trounstine, former political editor of The Mercury News, died April 11, 2022, at home, The Mercury News reported. He was 72.
Trounstine also was a former communications director for Gov. Gray Davis and a co-founder, with Jerry Roberts, of the CalBuzz blog.
“As a reporter, Phil was a master of what he called the ‘perceptual scoop’ — grasping the big picture meta-angle of hiding-in-plain-sight trends or shifts in the political zeitgeist that no else had yet recognized, explored or explained,’ Roberts said.
