The Mojave Desert News in California City, one of Eastern Kern County’s oldest newspapers, is looking for an editor/reporter looking for a challenging yet rewarding career. The qualified candidate will cover all facets, including local government, a spaceport, K-12 education in two school districts, business, community events and sports.
One day, the editor can be covering a graduation ceremony, the next day looking into how the city council will allocate cannabis tax revenue or a modest housing development boom.
California City is the fourth largest city by land size in California, with more than 203 square miles, but most of its population within a small portion. Next door in Mojave, the Mojave Air and Space Port serves as a testing ground for the aerospace industry, including rocket launch testing and the manufacturing hub for Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShip II and III classes of suborbital vehicles
This person will be the sole editorial person for the position but will oversee a freelance correspondent who covers a small community in the Mojave Desert News.
Responsibilities on the reporter side include covering city government, community features, businesses, board meetings and occasionally sports. Some copy for special sections is required, including the annual Scenic 395 Magazine, which covers most of the northern end of U.S. 395 to the California/Nevada state line. The qualified candidate will also have some photography experience; video skills are also a bonus, but not a deal-breaker.
The editor’s hat requires editing submitted content for style and quality, sending copy to the paginator posting stories and reviewing the proof to the desertnews.com website and working with the publisher on certain stories as needed.
We are looking for someone with at least one or two years of experience at a weekly or small daily, but we will consider promising recent graduates with a solid internship and strong clips.
California City is about 45 minutes from Palmdale and Lancaster, two hours from downtown Los Angeles and three hours from Las Vegas. Within a few hours’ drive around us are plenty of outdoor activities, from skiing and snowboarding in the winter or fishing, hiking and swimming in the summer. Cal City is also a proving ground for off-highway vehicle mania and is next door to other OHV parks.
The cost of living is low compared to the rest of California.
