The Daily Independent in Ridgecrest, Calif., seeks a full-time photojournalist for its print and online presence and its various special publications.
Newspaper experience is preferred, but we will consider applicants with strong internship experience and a vibrant portfolio.
What we want: a photographer who pushes themselves to new photographic challenges, who can come back from standard public meetings with compelling images and bring to life stunning portraits of community members. We’re looking for someone who can capture small-town community events with an empathic eye.
The position will cover everything from high school/youth sports to breaking news to classroom antics.
Strong emphasis on high school sports as the Daily Independent covers three high schools and several teams.
Stand-alone images are also a focus if they carry a story by themselves.
Knowledge of Associated Press style and some writing skills are a must, as we are looking for a news photographer who remembers they are a journalist above all else. Video skills a plus.
This position will also curate the Daily Independent’s Instagram account, help coordinate submitted images, post photo galleries and participate in planning sessions with other editorial staff.
The ideal candidate for the position includes:
- Strong Photoshop and color-correcting skills a must; knowledge of Quark XPress and Adobe Bridge are a bonus
- Some video experience
- Generates their own story ideas and photo projects
- Juggle multiple assignments
- Social media skills
Own equipment is a must, the DI will provide an equipment stipend. Applicants must also have their own vehicle with proper insurance.
Compensation is negotiable depending on experience.
The Daily Independent, a Gannett newspaper, publishes three times a week in print and online every day. We also produce several special publications throughout the year.
Ridgecrest is located in the Indian Wells Valley in the northeast part of the Mojave Desert, about 2.5 hours from downtown Los Angeles, 2 hours from Bakersfield and 3.5 hours from Las Vegas. The cost of living in the area is below average for California.
The area is home to Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, the Navy’s largest weapons systems development testing and research installation.
While Ridgecrest is in the middle of the desert, the region is home to plenty of outdoor opportunities including hiking, cycling, horseback riding and off-roading.
The town is considered the gateway to Death Valley National Park, just over an hour away. Winter activities are ample in Mammoth Mountain, about 3 hours north.
