Reporter

Website The Daily Independent

The Daily Independent in Ridgecrest, California, is looking for a news reporter. Qualified candidates should be just as comfortable rushing to the scene of a three-alarm fire and turn around a story on deadline as they are with writing an engaging story on crazy classroom antics at one of the local schools — often in the same day.

The qualified reporter will cover a range of topics, with a large emphasis on education and water (both are highly important issues here) and community news. Some night and weekend assignments expected.

It’s a great position for someone starting out or for someone looking to move up from a weekly. Solid reporting skills, social media know-how, knowledge of photography and video, and working knowledge of AP Style are musts. The reporter will also be responsible for producing a weekly podcast to add an audio element to his or her stories. A college degree or related job experience and experience at a weekly or small daily is preferred, but we will consider strong college graduates.

We are a small daily morning newspaper owned by GateHouse Media. We publish Tuesday-Saturday and produce several special sections and niche publications. Ridgecrest is an affordable-living city of 27,000 in the Mojave Desert area of Kern County. The city is next door to Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, located approximately 2.5 hours from Los Angeles, 3.5 hours from Las Vegas and 2 hours from Bakersfield. Mammoth Lakes is approximately 3 hours away. There are many nearby outdoor recreation activities and an affordable cost of living.

We offer paid time off, paid sick leave, health, dental, vision, life insurance, and a 401(k) plan.

To apply, please send a resume, cover letter, 3-5 clips of different writing styles, photography samples and, if you have them, design samples to publisher John Watkins and managing editor Christopher Livingston.
