Joe Baltake, 74

Joe Baltake, a former critic at The Sacramento Bee who wrote more than 10,000 movie reviews during his career, died March 26, 2020, at home in Haddonfield, N.J., after a long battle with multiple myeloma, The Bee reported. He was 74.

Baltake wrote more than 10,000 movie reviews, his wife recalled. His favorite actor was Jack Lemmon. Baltake was with The Bee for 17 years.

“He wrote well, and that’s obviously very important,” said Gregory Favre, The Bee’s former executive editor. “At the time the movie market for The Bee was huge; we had a huge number of movie ads for the size of our city. It was such a vibrant movie town. You’d go to the movie houses and they’d be filled. That’s one of the reasons it prompted me to bring in a full-time movie critic.”
