Lauren Gustus, editor of The Sacramento Bee who oversees 10 western McClatchy newsrooms, adds president to her duties.

“Local community journalism has never been more important than during the coronavirus crisis,” Wortel said. “I’ll miss working with a great team of journalists but everyone should know that The Sacramento Bee is in great hands under Lauren’s leadership.”

Wortel, a member of the CNPA Board of Directors, moved to Sacramento from McClatchy’s Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram in April 2017.

Gustus, former editor at The Star-Telegram, joined the Sacramento team in 2018. She also is McClatchy’s director of community funding.
