The SPJ NorCal Chapter’s Freedom of Information Committee will present James Madison Awards to CNPA General Counsel Jim Ewert and former Legal Counsel Nikki Moore.
Ewert and Moore will be recognized for their role in shepherding SB 1421 through the state Legislature.
“By tirelessly lobbying for the bill for the California News Publishers Association, Moore and Ewert accomplished what news media and government transparency advocates had tried to do for decades,” the news release said. “The effects are already becoming public. Since the law took effect on Jan. 1, records released by the City of Burlingame about an officer’s sexual exploitation of a woman he arrested led the San Mateo County district attorney to reopen a criminal inquiry in the case.”
Others to be honored at a March 14 banquet in San Francisco include: Bert Robinson, Mercury News/East Bay Times; The Tribune of San Luis Obispo, with the Center for Investigative Reporting; Michael Toren, City College of San Francisco-The Guardsman; and The Fresno Bee.
