Marge Apperson, former editor-publisher of Southern Siskiyou Newspapers and a former CNPA director, died June 28, 2019, in hospice in Yreka after a short illness. She was 90.
Marge and then-husband Orbell Apperson Jr., both Stanford Daily alumni, had acquired the Mount Shasta Herald from Or’s parents in 1950. They acquired The Weed Press in 1970 and the Dunsmuir News in 1977.
She was editor and he was business manager of the newspapers. In 1978 they were divorced but continued as co-publishers until 1988 when Or retired. Marge continued as publisher, retiring in November 1993, following the sale of the business. All are now GateHouse Media properties.
Marge, who was the first woman to join the CNPA Board of Directors, was a member of the board from 1977 to 1988.
A celebration of life will be held at the upper lodge in Mt. Shasta City Park at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Madrone Hospice in Yreka or a charity of your choice.
