McCombs, Deuel to Newspaper Hall of Fame

Unnamed (3)The California Press Foundation will induct Allen P. McCombs and Charles Hastings Deuel into the California Newspaper Hall of Fame this Dec. 3.

McCombs (1929-2021) was the owner of Champion Newspapers in Chino from 1956 to 2017 and was its publisher until 2006. He was CNPA president in 1982.

Deuel (1868-1947) was editor and publisher of the Chico Record (now the Chico Enterprise-Record) from 1897 until 1945.

Cal Press inducts two into the California Newspaper Hall of Fame each year: one who has been deceased fewer than 10 years and one for more than 10 years.

Cal Press also will present its Philip N. McCombs Achievement Award for lifetime service, the Mark Twain Award for Journalism Excellence in California and the Jack Bates Award for distinguished service to the California Press.

The organization’s 144th Annual Winter Meeting will be held virtually from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3. Registration is required and membership is encouraged. Register now.
