Sonoma Media Investments’ Rohnert Park print facility, which prints The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa, will go silent in April, The Press Democrat reports. Printing will move to the San Francisco Chronicle’s East Bay press facility.

Steve Falk, pictured, SMI’s CEO and publisher, cited the rising maintenance costs of 35-year-old press equipment and a dramatic shift in readers’ habits as reasons for the operational shift.

“We’re one of the last West Coast newspapers to outsource our printing,” Falk said. “The Chronicle’s newer and advanced presses guarantee a high-quality product with better reproduction and expanded color capacity on more pages. They also print the Sacramento and Fresno newspapers, among several others. I’m convinced our readers will have an even better experience because of the newer presses.”
