A memorial service will be held Sept. 17 in Upland for Steve Hunt, president, publisher and editor of GateHouse Media’s Daily Press in Victorville, five weekly publications and their websites. Hunt died Aug. 27, 2019, The Daily Press reported. He was 64 and had congestive heart failure.
Hunt’s 45-year news career began with police reporting and sports writing at the Pasadena Star-News. He became a news-hub manager and news executive while at the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and the then-Los Angeles News Group. Hunt was a Southern California News Group senior editor when he was recruited to Victorville in 2014 as editor and then became president and publisher in 2017.
“Steve had all the best qualities of those editors you read about in books or see in movies,” said Frank Pine, executive editor of the Southern California News Group and Bay Area News Group. “He was hard-charging, straight-shooting and exacting. He was clever, intelligent, thoughtful and compassionate. He had a terrific sense of humor. He was dedicated to his work and to his people. He cared very deeply. He was a champion of the Fourth Estate who loved the communities he covered. He was a mentor to many and a dear friend, as well.”
