UNITY: Journalists for Diversity, a strategic partnership of several national journalism organizations, has announced it will dissolve and divide its treasury among its three member organizations.
The coalition, started in 1998, had these aims:
- Advocate fair and accurate coverage about diversity, especially race, nationality, ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation; and
- Aggressively challenge the industry to staff its organizations at all levels to reflect the country’s diversity.
UNITY has struggled to carve out a financially sustainable path since the departures of National Association of Black Journalists in 2011 and National Association of Hispanic Journalists in 2013. The three remaining UNITY organizations are the Asian American Journalists Associaiton, National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association and Native American Journalists Association.
