The Columbia Journalism Review explains why Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord), whose 11th Congressional District includes most of Contra Costa County, formed The Working Group on Saving Local News. The group has sought expertise from a variety of media trade associations and publishers to help them understand the extent of the challenges outlets face, the CJR piece said.

DeSaulnier also introduced The Saving Local News Act, which would amend existing nonprofit legislation to make it easier for news organizations to achieve nonprofit status.

Dan Borenstein, editorial page editor and columnist at the East Bay Times, told CJR this about his local congressman: “I’m not sure that he, any more than anyone else, sees a clear path forward, but he certainly sees the importance of preserving local journalism.”
