CNPA will present its 2023 Legislator of the Year Award to Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) on Feb. 7 in Sacramento.

Wicks was first elected to the Assembly in 2018 and is now chair of the Assembly Appropriations Committee. She has been an advocate on issues including social, justice, the housing crisis and women’s rights.

Over the last year, she has taken on one of the biggest fights for the future of our industry, AB 886, requiring big tech to compensate publishers for the use of their content.

Despite massive spending by Big Tech, Wicks has continued to fight for our industry, and AB 886 remains a top priority for her this year. When the bill was held in the Senate Judiciary Committee, Wicks could have given up the fight, but instead she participated in an informational hearing about Journalism in the Digital Age and has continued to fight for the future of our industry.

Please join us at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 as we honor Wicks for her valuable support.

The event is part of the CNPA Legislative Fly-in. The day begins at 11 a.m. and includes guest speakers and visits with legislators at the Capitol. Lunch is included. Please register by Feb. 1.
